    Warren-----

The original gasket was GM #3981920. It was discontinued in February, 1974 and replaced by GM #6259319. That gasket was discontinued without supercession in August, 1988. However, later GM specified the GM #3921940, the gasket originally used for 1968-69 with L-89 as the replacement for 1971 LS-6. It was discontinued in April, 1990 and replaced by GM #10159508. The latter was discontinued without supercession in January, 1999.

If you want a gasket similar to the originals, then use Victor HS 3805VJ or HS 3820VC (of these 2 I would use the latter).

What would I use if it were me? I'd use a Fel-Pro #1027, aka GM #12363414 (they are both EXACTLY the same Fel-Pro gasket). Absolutely. Positively. The only way to go.

        orange vs. blue

If I remember correctly, the original aluminum head gaskets were all an orange composition type measuring about 0.040" thick. The current Fel-Pro gaskets are a vivid blue that will not hold paint well. The "el-cheapo" Dana, Victor, etc composition gaskets are orange - heck, I have 2 or 3 sets in the garage now.
