    Frame problem ?

I put my 63 convertible up on jack stands, with the stands positioned as diagramed in the service manual. I noticed that both doors were difficult to open while the car was on the stands, and would not close once they were opened. When the car was back on its wheels, the doors worked fine. Is this typical behavior or does it suggest a problem ?

This is normal behavior. Frame flex is a ride harshness tuning method.

I'd take a close look at the frame, it's been a while since I had a convertible mid-year, but I don't remember that much flex in the frame/body area. At least take a good look at frame rust in the main frame in front of the wheels and also in the rear kickup area where the trailing arm attaches and upward from that point. One technique is to use a small hammer and pound on any suspicious looking places. The hammer will not damage any solid frame but will show weakness that is hard to see otherwise. Don't be timid, a sound frame will not be hurt by a solid hammer blow.

I would give your frame a good check especially at the rear kick up points, sound like it is weak. When I put my '63 conv. on jack stands the doors open and close normally.

With an empty gas tank and no spare tire the frame is going to flex less and may move about 1/4 inch, but with a full tank and spare in place, I've seen many that flex about 1/2 inch when put on a lift.
