Do you really need to strip all the paint off??

Thanks to Chuck I've been spending a lot of time on the autobodystore forum but there isn't a whole lot of guys there that are "into" lacquer so I do have one question for those of us that are still "into" it.

If a car still has it's original acrylic lacquer and it isn't checked, cracked, lifting or anything else that lacquer likes to do, do you have to strip it all off down to the original fiberglass or at least primer to get a good job? I've read in a few books and lived by if the original paint is still sound then there is no reason to remove it.

What do you paint guys think?

Greg, Suggest you strip it all the way down...

..."Short cuts" are an oxymoron in the paint trade IMHO... Best, Dennis

Greg, The thinners will get into the old original paint and then you are in trouble for sure. No shortcuts in painting. If you cheat you will pay dearly in the end. JD

If it's not doing any of those things, why are you repainting it? Not trying to be a smart-aleck, but just asking.

If it isn't "checked, cracked, lifting, or anything else" can we assume that the paint is in fairly decent shape? If it is, have you thought about just cleaning up what is there and trying to rejuvenate the original paint? There are lots of folks, me included, that prefer original paint over new, even when the original has some wear and tear.

I nice VERY light sanding with some 1000-1500 wet/dry paper followed by buffing will often greatly improve lacquer.

If you expect to get a first class, long lasting paint job, by all means remove all the old paint. If you do not and have a problem with the paint you might as well call "Ghost Busters" for warranty help because the paint manufacturer ain't gonna do so. Putting modern substrates on old technology is like trying to gold plate peanut butter
