C3: Number 1 Xmember belly pan replacement hints

I'm replaceing this piece of sheetmetal. I noticed there are a number of spotwelds from the pan to the frame. The new piece I have has no holes in it. I was wondering if I should drill out holes in the new piece in the same positions as the spot welds and just plug weld?

Any other suggestions in replacing this piece?

Steve,

Spot welds do not require a hole. If you do not have spot weld equipment you may have to drill a small hole and plug weld.

Are you talking about the front crossmember under the engine? What is wrong with yours? Terry

It's rusted out in the middle.
The frame is stripped and on a frame rotissarie

Thats a bummer. I make the tool for pulling the dent from the underside of the of the front crossmember. But, it won't help you with rust. I know what you are talking about with the holes. Going from my memory.....the bottom pan was tack welded in place in several locations but I seem to recall the holes in the pan also and it was stick welded in those areas. Unless you have a giant pinch welder, I would try to similate the electric welds. Not too tough to do. Good luck, Terry

I read your post again. I would do as you say, drill and plug weld it in place. Clamp it down with vise grips and C-clamps then attack it with a wire feed. Should look real nice. Terry
