    How to remove paint

I have a pair of big block valve covers that have been painted over with orange paint out of a spray can some time ago. How can I remove this coat of paint and not remove the origianl paint?

    Thanks

Personally, I don't know of any way to do it in a manner that would preserve the original paint and result in a finished product that would be anywhere near satisfactory.

Joe, I can tell you enamel or lacquer thinner want do the job. I assume the original paint is a thermoset and the spray can was an air dry paint. I did not know if someone out in Corvette land knew and understood how these two differendt paints worked and could tell me how to get the air dry to turn a loose. Tnanks and maybe someone will come up with the answer a little later.

The kind of paint originally used on engines, including painted valve covers, is really not that much different in BASIC chemistry to that available today in most spray cans or otherwise. The paint formulations have changed dramatically and for a variety of reasons, but the BASIC chemistry is similar.

The paint originally used on the engines was not an epoxy-type paint. The spray can MAY have been an epoxy-type paint. Epoxy-type paint is more resistant to chemical removal than other paint types. However, anything that will remove the epoxy-type paint, assuming that's what it is, will also remove the underlying original paint.

Joe, Thanks It kind of looks like I need to keep looking for some nice original paint BB valve covers.
