    1957 Corvette

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN PURCHASE THE GEAR THAT THE WINDOW HANDLE MOUNTS ON FOR THE WINDOW REGULATOR ON A 1957 CORVETTE???

    OR

WHAT VEHICLE I CAN GET ONE FROM A JUNK-YARD THAT WILL MATCH???

    THANKS,
    MIKE

    Mike-----

The part you are talking about is a SPLINED SHAFT and not a gear, although it might appear like a "gear". On a C1 I believe that the window crank shaft is part of the regulator assembly and not a separately serviced part. It was never available in SERVICE from GM. The complete regulator assembly was available, but it was discontinued years ago.

The Corvette window regulators are unique-to-Corvette pieces, so you can't obtain a regulator assembly from another GM vehicle and use it in a Corvette. It is possible that some of the components, like the window crank shaft, of regulators from other vehicles are the same as Corvette. It MIGHT be possible to transfer such a shaft from another regulator to a Corvette regulator. It's going to take someone with more experience than I with C1 regulators to provide information on this. I can tell you that several Corvette vendors do provide rebuild service for window regulators and could likely repair yours.

almost all chevys of the 50's and 60's , as well as other GM makes of the era, utilize similar window regulator gears. good luck junk-yarding. mike

the shaft is splined on the handle end but the end that contacts the regulator's teeth is what i'd call a gear. simply drill out the three rivets that secure the shaft to the regulator body and the shaft(splinded and geared) is removable. after trip to junkyard, simply rivet the donor shaft in your old regulator. BTW, failed regulator assemblies i've repaired in the past usually had a "teeth" issue, not the gear end of the shaft. i usually repair the teeth(which are usually long gone in one area of the regulator) by mig-welding and filing the weld bead to replicate the worn away tooth. I shoulda went to dental school. good luck, mike

Mike, I did change the same shaft/gear on my '57. I had to look at many at the local scrap yard before I found a shaft of the right lenght. If I remember right the correct replacemenmt came from a '58 chevy door.
                    Good luck.. Pierre

Mike, if you can't find one in a junk yard, check with Paragon. Paragon used to have some of them. Believe there are 2 different ones, if I remember correctly. Difference is in the shaft that goes through the cup (gear cover). There's a small and large shaft/cup opening. Good luck, Gary....
