    '53-'55 Gas Tank

Can anyone please advise whether the pairs of holes underneath the gas tank compartment on the '52 -'55 Vettes were originally covered in some fashion? In other words, when you look up underneath the car, should you see the exposed gas tank or some type of cover or insulation material? Thanks very much.

Mike ---- IMSMC there is nothing covering the gas tank from its bottom being exposed, however, I don't remember any holes in the tank compertment bottom. (It has been a while for me snce I sold my '54.)

Definitely open holes--the area needed to breathe, rather than to build up vapors inside.

Thanks for responding. I'm sure the holes are there, and I understand that they are for the purpose of allowing the gas tank compartment to "breathe", avoiding potentially hazardous gas fume build-up. But I've heard that the holes originally may have had some type of air permeable material that would still allow free air flow, while keeping out road dirt, etc. Ever hear of anything like that? Are the NCRS Judges looking for such a material, versus an exposed under-tank? Thanks again.

I have never seen any type of material under the gas tank. I have had many 53-54 cars apart ranging from #029 through the 1955 model year.

Also note the presence of these open holes will allow a great deal of heat and fumes into the cockpit if the tank cover is not well sealed.
