    Response to REGULATOR question

I want to thank all who responded to my inquiry about the '57 window regulator.

I want to share with you what I have done to remedy my problem.

I sawed off the shaft (the end that goes on the handle) from an Olds and a Pontiac at the junkyard- both fairly new cars since they do not store old cars in my area- both matched the handle perfect.
Then I drilled and tapped both the piece on the regulator and the end I cut off at the yard. Put a 3/4 inch long 10/32 bolt in the center an mated both pieces together and then welded them together with my wire feed arc welder.
I put this 3/4 inch bolt through the center after the handle broke off twice while installing the glass. I had only welded it and it could NOT take the pressure I put on the handle when I tried cranking the window up and down. (installing the window is another story all together) I think I have a handle on it now!
If it brakes off now, I guess the next thing to do is to replace the entire shaft and re-rivet it back together. I take it the spring is NOT involved in doing this process. I hope not.

I will call Paragon since they do NOT list the shaft in question. I want to be prepared in the event my tapping and welding does not take care of the problem. Got to plan ahead.

Thanks again for the quick response,

    LG,
    Mike

    Re: Response to REGULATOR question

Rich, yes the spring is involved when you replace the gear cup assembly. The regulator arm itself will need to be clamped down with vice grips to the bracket when the 3 rivets are drilled out. If you go this route inspect the regulator for worn teeth as that would be a good time to replace it. When you call Paragon, ask for used parts. Gary....
