Early C3 Corvettes may have either natural as-forged shafts or dip painted semi-gloss black. When they were dip-painted, the arm was painted at the same time. So, in this case, the retainers and bolts on the shaft ends were also painted.

When the shafts were natural, as-forged, the retainers were natural steel.

In the case of natural, as-forged shafts with natural steel retainers, all will rather quickly revert to natural, RUSTED appearance. So, it's wise to assume that the ones on your car were originally painted.

How do you you know which sort of finish the parts on your car actually were originally? The ONLY way you know is to have the original, unmolested shafts to inspect.

m greene I just took a trip to my attic to put couple things in storage and looked at my upper control arms that I removed in 1992 from my original owner 70. Have not cleaned them. From what I can tell the shafts are not painted and the washers on the ends are plated.
