This is my first try at posting a photo so bear with me. This is a photo of my L-7-0 461X head showing the rounded tops. Thanks to Ray Carney for putting my photos in his 461 survey. It seems that this round top is contrary to the normal flat top seen on early 461 heads.

Re: 461 X Heads
Dave--
Thanks for the photo. I've been looking for flat vs. rounded for some time on the x-heads. I think it's safe to say that there were a number of molds used--as they wore out, they were replaced. Yours is the earliest rounded-hump that I've seen, and it surprises me. I'm assuming it hasn't been altered by a previous owner (casting date and number).
My experience on the other end is that for the most part the flat tops phased out in January in favor of the rounded humps--yet I've documented a Fxx2 flat top head.
We just need to keep asking, looking, and trying to figure trends, because absolutes will never be in the world of 45-year-past assembly lines.- Top

Re: 461 X Heads
Mike,
Seems odd to me that someone would go to the trouble of altering the "humps" to change them from flat to round. That would be an awful lot of work to create something that is not typical. I suppose anything is possible but it seems like a longshot.- Top
