Need to get my '57 wiper motor and tach rebuilt (wiper motor only has one speed instead of two, and tach is wildly optimistic), and radio needs to be "tuned-up" (works, but fades somewhat after a few minutes and the wonderbar sticks sometimes). Any recommendations/experiences for folks that do good work? Thanks!

Re: '57 Tach/Wiper Motor/Radio Rebuild
(1) Tach: AC Delco and United Delco have a chain of authorized independent
dealers coast to coast. Check your yellow pages (radio, speedometer).
They have parts and experience to rebuild your tach A-OK. Plus, the
cable itself AND the drive (generator and/or distributor based) should
be checked/ verified at the same time.
(2) Wonderbar: Same advice although it's getting harder to find guys that
still work on vacuum tube stuff. My United Delco dealer in Denver DOES
work on Wonderbar (when pushed against the wall) and I had one refurb'd
for an NCRS fellow member in England last summer. Learned a potload!
The slider/seek mechanism is NOT electrical. It's a combo of springs,
cogs, and solenoid/clutch mechanisms. There is NO internal fuse. If
the slider develops high friction, you can burn out a solenoid. The
usual syndrome is, radio doesn't seek smoothly and sometimes the radio
fuse blows. Then, after replacing the factory original fuse with one
rated the same, a bigger fuse gets shoved in. Then, after a while the
radio quites altogether!
Problem was radio need routine service and lube. Didn't get done, the
fuse got replaced with too large a unit and internal damage was done to
the radio. Get it worked on now!
(3) Wiper motor. Many of the catalog houses do this service and you can
choose from a selection of packages for how 'concours' you want the
job done.- Top
