    clock

The clock is one of the hardest things in the C-3 cars to keep working. And maybe also the C-2 cars. I had my clock rebuilt years ago and it is now dead again. Would the clock stay working longer if it was a quartz movement in it? Are would it still die after a few years also? How big a point hit is a clock with the quartz movement in it? Thanks

    Hmmm...

I convertedmy mechanical clock to quartz in my "other" car about 20 years ago. You can use it to verify your watch. Dunno about the point hit, but judges look for them.

        Re: clock

As you probably know, these clocks are electro-mechanical (is that a word? ) that uses electricity to wind them and simple spring action to run. I have only had two Corvettes and both clocks didn't work. In both instances I pulled them, cleaned the contacts, and cleaned the gears and mechanism with electrical contact cleaner. Once they were dry, I used some fine oil and put a couple of drops on the shafts of the gears.

My 72 clock still works over five years later. I know the archives have information on points cleaning and that may be all you need.

            PV test

If you thinking of of doing a PV test the car will fail with the quartz movement in it.

                Re: clock

These old clocks will work for some time if you keep the battery charged in your car. The battery running low damages the contacts on the clock. If you are not showing the car at NCRS events the quartz movement is the way to go. How many points do you loose if the clock doesn't work at all?

A quartz clock will NOT pass PV. If you remember you are allowed one "fix" in a 15 minute time period. Sorta hard to change a clock in 15 minutes IF you happen to have a spare stock movement unit available

If the ops judge is really on the ball, it will fail an ops check also as there is no sound from the auto rewind mechanism. I believe that is a 25 point hit in flight judging, or about a half point hit on the overall score. But only if the judging team is on the ball.

                            Kelly,

If you follow Gary's advice your clock should work fine.

Then as Bob said, you need to either keep the battery well charged or disconect it when not in use or in storage.

Once the battery runs low the contact inside the clock fuses shut. Once that happens the clock must be pulled , the contact needs to be cleaned ,and the clock reinstalled.

You clock could have other problems , but 90% of the time a low or dead battery was the cause of the failure! So , since you are going to pull it anyway , you may as well try the fix first. Than just don't let the low battery get to it again and it will run fine and as it is supposed to.
