    C2 Rear Spring Rust

    Hi Guys!

I have disassembled an original standard rear spring for restoration. It looks to be in good condition with surface rust and even has some of the original gray paint. I also measured the free arch before disassembly and it was fine. However, there are a couple of areas that show pitting on the main leaf as well as a middle leaf, which is a concern. The attached pic is the worst area. I would like to get some opinions if this would still be okay to use. The car will be judged and driven, so it needs to be correct, functional and safe. Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Don

    Don,

My original '66 spring was similar to yours in terms of some rust and pitting and I opted to replace just the main leaf, as I described in my article in the Corvette Restorer from a few years ago (I can't remember which issue or year off the top of my head). Unfortunately, to get a new main leaf you'll probably have to purchase an entire repro spring. I recommend Eaton Detroit Spring, but make sure you talk to them about the importance of getting a main leaf having the correct 45 degree angle cuts. Over the years, I've heard of some variability in the angle of the cuts on Eaton springs.

Thanks Gary. Yes, I checked the Restorer as well as the archives. Just not a lot of info on when the corrosion is bad enough to require replacement. I think I will just play it safe and replace the entire spring.

        Thanks!
