    C1 WCFB Throttle Plate Finish

What finish should the trottle plate on 2 X 4 WCFBs have? Sometimes I see them look cast and other times black. Thanks, Ted

Most secondaries are brass....some primaries are plated carbon steel. The air valves on the weighted arms are typically plated carbon steel as well. Any throttle plates that are black are probably due to discoloration and buildup from backfiring.

I was looking at the 2x4 setup on the restored chassis picture John Hinkley posted for the road draft tube question and noticed they look black. I've noticed that on other 'restored' carbs also. Does the cast finish hold true for single fours and 2x4s? Thanks, Ted

Maybe the restorer put some coating on the bare cast iron to keep it from rusting. I have 6 original unrestored 2x4 carbs and 3 single carbs. They are all bare cast iron with no trace of any paint or coating anywhere.

As Tom mentioned people paint the base black to keep rust away and people think they came that way.( but it looks pretty) you paint your base with a cast looking paint it also will keep rusting down

              Hi Brad

When I sent my carb out for my 62 vette to get rebuilt and restored, it came back with a black base. They told me that was correct. And I thought I read it some where that it was black.

I've been told by knowledgeable judges that the black paint on these cast pieces is incorrect. So....last spring, I removed the paint and shot them with some clear anti-rust stuff (Mopar MP-50, which lasts longer than WD-40) with no rust issues (yet). However, I am lucky enough to store my car in an air-conditioned, humidity controlled garage.

Exactly. I have become dependant on Dupli Color Cast Iron Grey engine paint for detail work. It's available in most auto parts stores. It dries to a very low gloss as can be seen on the air cleaner top in the upper right corner of the attached picture. The engine and brake booster/mc are also painted with it. The engine is a 355 I built and am installing in my '69 C10 stepside.

BTW The headers are '81 Corvette that I removed the heat shields and AIR tubes from. They are coated with Eastwood's Stainless Exhaust Coating, brushed on. It needs to be heat cured but that will take care of it'self when I fire this thing up.

I don't have my '57 any more, but Bob Kunz did the WCFB's for me, and my photos show the baseplates as dark natural cast iron (not black).
