    C-3, General questions

    1970 Corvette.
On the LS-5s the JG states that the oil cap is chrome with the stamped letter S (for Stant) on the center rivet and no other markings. Yet at an NCRS event recently I saw at least one 1970 LS-5 have an oil cap with the S on the center rivet and SM stamped outside of the rivet. No mention about what the underside of the cap looks like. Some oil caps have a squared S that looks like a 5.

Exhaust clamps. What distinguishes the original clamps from reproductions? Is there something specific stamped on originals?

    Thanks,
    Scott

What you describe is a commonally available reproduction -- NOT an original cap. That is why the judging guide describes the original cap (and even includes a drawing).

My latest edition and most current of the 1970-1972 Judging Guide doesn't have a drawing. I wish it did on the cap and on wiper blades.

Did 71 LS-5 cars have the cap painted orange if they used the black rubber cap? Was this something that was done on early cars and later changed? are was it just a random thing through out 71-72 production? Thanks

My judged 1971 LS5 has the cap black rubber, not painted. Jim

Some of the Mark IV rubber oil fill caps were painted, and some not. I don't know if there is any progression to that. Others may know more than I.

There was never a drawing for the wiper blades. Someplace in my boxes of real photographs I have close-uips of an original set, but the patent numbers are almost invisible wihtout magnification.

Must have been space limitations that kept the oil fill cap drawing out of the latest edition. I believe at one time there were three oil fill cap drawings, but I'm not sure all of them ever saw print.

                Interesting!

And my observation from walking scrap yards is I've seen it both ways on the handful of 'untouched' BB car engines from the era with no real rhyme/reason as far as year of production goes. I wonder if it might be the result of 'touch up' at either Tonawanda or the final assy plant...

                  Scott,
This is a wiper blade from 71 #21467. I hope the photo is attached.

                    Re: Interesting!

I suspect Tonawanda changed where they installed the oil fill cap over time -- before and then after paint, then maybe back to before. I doubt any orange touch up took place at St Louis. I seem to remember someone from that plant stating that they didn't have any engine orange paint there.

                              Ancient Chinese Secret

You posted the link to the PAGE you were working on.

I cut and pasted the link to your page into my browser. I then right-clicked on the picture of the wiper, went to properties, and opened that. I then cut and pasted the actual link of the PHOTO from the properties box into the "Optional Image URL" below.

When you use the photo hosting program, it "likely" will display somewhere a URL link to the PHOTO as opposed to the PAGE.

                              I hope that helps.
