    Re: W mark back side

Yes Harry, the measurments are taken from the top of the washer when it is pressed against the top retaining bump.

Don't know how many suppliers there might of been.

      Re: W mark

Tracy, This W versus M thin is an age old discussion. I just held mine up to your pic and my 63 stick has an M. No matter which way I turn it the thing appears to be an M. Yours is clearly a W. Here is just a hunch on my part.
Accelerator rods for the fuel cars were made by a company tht goes by MW. Wonder if the same company made the dipsticks??? John D.

Harry, My dipstick has an M an inch down from the rivet and the top of the hilt or handle is flat across.Notice how really short the top of these handles are compared to the repros. There appears to be at least two variations of the 63 dipsticks doesn't there. Well stands to reason as GM had many suppliers of everything. My chrome handle has typical factory chrome on it. Nothing to brag about. John D

John, it's a very clear crisp stamp. Depending on the FONT of the day (1963) one could argue that it either character (M or W). Looking at the FONT in your question, the M has straight sides where the W has slanted sides. If I go by today's FONT it is a W on the dipstick. But who knows????

My digital camera bit the dust so I can't take a picture. I think there will be one under the tree!

Harry, My dipstick has an "M". I have the stick in front of the screen and it's definitely an M. That is the consensus of 5 different guys that looked at it not too long ago also. All agreed that it wasn't a W.
I bought a new Sony cheap digital. Just have to figure out how to work it now. Takes a college degree to figure it out. JD

John, must be a PHD camera!

PHD is not a Doctorate, it actually means "Push Here Dummy"

                  Tracy,

mine is exactly like you describe - drilled the rivets out and replated and then put new rivets in - Dr Chuck still has MANY rivets!
