My Nov '56 built '57 had rubber (neoprene?)/textile laminated (looks like 5-ply) rectangular pads about .25 inch thick at the eight main central body mounting positions (shown as Shim p/n 378516 in the AIM). These look like industrial conveyor belting material. The repro kit I have has about .10 inch thick fiber pads. Which is correct? The kit supposedly covers 53-57, was there a change somewhere along the line?
I know there was some repair to a couple of the mounting points at some time in my car's history, but the most of the positions had these "shims".
Also, the AIM shows a ribbed pad, like those along the main rails and on the "X"-member, at the center of the rear crossmember. Is this supposed to bridge the two ribs in the spare tire tub which run longitudinally either side of the hold down bolt hole, or fit between the ribs (it would have to be trimmed in length to do the latter)? If I put it under the ribs, it is very tight and raises the floor of the spare tub about the thickness of the shim, putting a bow in the floor. Do I need to shim the rear body mounts to bring this to a height so the pad will just fit snugly under the floor ribs?
And finally, in Noland Adam's book, pg 171, there is a picture of a rolling chassis apparently ready for the body. It appears the shims at the mounting positions are held in place with two strips of (1/2"?) masking tape at each position. The JG says nothing about this that I can find. Is this judged? Was this done in regular production (as the later cars were) or was it possibly done for the photo shoot, to keep pieces in place until the body was put on the frame? This is not an assembly line photo.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
