    1972 wheel weights

What wheel weight was used on the '72 Corvette?

Was the same weight used in previous years? If so what years?

    Re: 1972 wheel weights

Jerome the answer to most of your questions took about three pages in The Corvette Restorer in, I think, 2006 with a follow-up one page story about six months later. To effectively recap that story here would be impossible for even the most talented of us -- and that ain't me.

There were something like five or seven companies that supplied wheel weights to the Corvette plant in St. Louis -- several are still in business, but details of the weights have changed in the last 35 years. Metric values have been added to the weights, for example.

Yes, the same weight manufacturers show up for a large number of years, and they are even used on other models of GM cars.

The article Terry is referring to appeared in the Corvette Restorer, Volume 31, Number 3, Winter 2005, titled Wheel Weights.

        C3 vs. C2 wheel weights

        Jerome,

The Restorer article that the others mention doesn't address the issue of which C3 years used which type of weights. The Restorer article focused on C2 cars. At some point the metric weight designation was added to the weights and I don't know what year that began. Perhaps some owners of C3's will chime in.

          Thanks Gary,

I also read the article and found it somewhat helpful, but still left me wondering what wheel weights where on the '72's original. Hopefully someone got the answer.

C3 vs. C2 wheel weights; need C3 data

            Jerome,

It's hard to write an article that covers many years. There just aren't that many items that apply to 10 or 15 years of production. I'm a C2 guy and really the article was intended to cover C2's only. I can't say those same weights were used for C1s or C3s. The survey info for the article came from C2 owners only. Someone with C3 expertise (not me!) should write a companion article for C3 wheel weights. It's doable. It just takes some e-mailing to C3 owners and a little time.
