1967 GM and Number Stamped Muffler

Does anyone make a correct 1967 GM + number stamped muffler? Also, when the manual states the that the lower surface was blacked out using a "mitted" application, what does mitted mean? Thanks.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhh! there was no mitting process, the manual is wrong. As far as part numbers there is some question as to what really appeared on the muffler, my original has only an A for Arvin.

No one makes such a muffler. Technically, the only one that could would be Ecklers since, as I understand it, they are the GM Restoration Parts licensee for just about all discontinued Corvette mufflers and pipes. However, Ecklers used to obtain their mufflers and pipes from Allen's. I don't know if they still do, or not.

So even though it is wrong, what does it mean?

My passenger side muffler has sprung an air leak out a crack in the front. So, I need to replace my mufflers. That being the case what would you guys choose to replace the mufflers with? Aluminized or stainless? What brand and dealer?

                    Kirk,

Although the practice never happened, the misinformation was that a paint mitt was dipped into black out and applied by hand "mitted" on the mufflers and pipes. As has been explained here before that would of been highly impractical on an assembly line operation. All black out was sprayed, search the archives, there are members that were there and pictures have been posted in the past of the black out process.
