Re: Half and Drive Shaft; longitudinal seam weld

        Chuck,

After reading your post about possible changing of the strength of the welds,
I went to a couple of welding shops and a place that does high performance work (with a shaft)and had several "experts" check them out. I told them of the process and they all felt there should be no problem.

Thanks for the info on the HAZ. The couple of judging manuals I've read says moderate amount, I agree I think those pics may be a little more than that.

        Thanks,

        Greg

Wayne. What do you make of the white drips on the half shaft? My passenger side half shaft was the same way. I also had the white inspection mark at the inboard seam (though the JG suggests that it should be lime green). I'm not sure how to recreate the heavy runs.

                '65 BB shot-peened half shafts

Tony -- This white paint is on my 396 passenger side inboard half-shaft end. Only became evident when I took a rag with Varsol to the dirt. I stopped after the paint began to flake off. I assumed at the time that it was not factory, because there was also a dab of white on one of the U-joint bearing caps. But now that you mention it on your car (produced about 50 BB's before mine), I'm not so sure.

As far as the lime green paint marks go, I found evidence on both of my half-shafts, but nowhere near the width that you see on flight-judged cars. Unfortunately, to expose the marks, I end up partially obliterating them, because a previous owner had sprayed black in that general area. Took a bunch of pics and put the shafts back on the car; will be a forensic project for another winter.
