0 always in the Pad Stamp?

A friend is considering a 1958 and has asked for my advice. The block is a seemingly correct 519 but the pad stamp reads F508CQ. I thought that a 0 was always used to hold a place in the stamping tool for those cases where the month and/or day were 1-9. My experience is with 1961-62 so I am not sure enough to advise either way. The date code is too tough to see right now.

Can some experts weigh in? Was there always a 0 in front of numbers 1-9 on the pad?

    Thanks in advance.

If the stamp pad shows May 8th..how does the engine casting date coincide? And does the birthdate of the car based in its VIN..all line up in order?

I don't know all of that information yet. This person does not live nearby otherwise I would look myself. I am trying to walk them through one step at a time but the pad stamp jumped out at me first.

        Thanks.

            Mike,

Looks OK to me. Two digits signifying the month started being used around mid January, 1960.

Have your friend check the cars birthdate using the birthday calculator from the C1 registry. Then check to see if the engine stamp and engine casting date are all in normal order.

that is correct for 1958.F for flint plant, may 8, C for base 230h.p., Q for manual trans. cast code should be D or E for april or may, followed by 1 or 2 digits for day, followed by 8 for 1958 but could be earlier by few months.

Joe, I would be really interested in the casting date on this 519 block. A "9" can be really hard to distinguish from an "8". Guess my point is that he needs to make sure it isn't a 1959 519 block. I know that 739's and 519's are supposedly mixed in late 58 production and early 59 production. However, I can see more 739's in early production 59's than 519's in late production 58's. Maybe a real 58 expert can set me straight if I am in error? Won't hurt my feelings. Might make it easier for me to find a motor for mine if I am wrong!!!!! That wouldn't be a bad thing.

Bill..others on this TDB will be far more knowledgable about 58's..than me. However..when reviewing an existing car..I say let the car speak for itself. Take down all the #'s and review them slowly.

More times than not ..a pattern will appear. Either a car that has retained its original equipment or one that has gone through changes.

Occasionally something really unique will appear that defies the norm.

Sometimes a non matching engine can lead to a very special car or engine! Embrace the unusual!

If you are building a car..then in my eyes either you build it to suit your own tastes or build it to conform to judging guidelines.
