Harry, the early design 64 doors had the raised fiberglass pad that the door handles would attach to. This is in reference to the statment you had mentioned from the JG. Apparently the cars with raised door handle pads were supossed to have notched hardtops and thus was ment as a method of determining an approxmate production number or cut-off time for the notched style. I have not yet received a response from anyone with an original 1964 hardtop that is notched, and from your research, no 64 cars came with notched hardtops.
Obviously raised door handle pads have nothing to do with hardtop clearance issues.
