    58 tach rebuilt

Just had my 58 tach rebuilt haven't taken car on the road yet but it dosen't seem to jive with the rpm. I put to it. felt I had around 3000-3500 at pedal and was getting abvout 2000 reading. Shoulder of tach cable slides in from tach side under dash and to( mine is dist. drive) distriutor? Thanks Brad. Also it was done by MJR.

get a tach/dwell meter and get accurate reading via the electronic tach. sears sells them, reasonably. then compare to the old mechanical tach. mike

The 58-61 tachs were designed to be driven off of the generator. The distributor drives at a different rate (it is either 2:1 or 1:2 I can't recall). Your choice is to either use a generator driven assembly or to have the tach recalibrated. It is done magnetically and is relatively cheap (yes, you would have to remove it again). One other choice would be to mount a gear reducer in series with the correct reduction (or amplification) needed. As Mr. Mccagh suggested, put a tach on the engine to obtain the true rpm. Then match it to the gauge readout. Simple division will tell you the correction needed.

And it's not so simple as is the tach calibrated properly. is the generator pulley the right diameter? How about the water pump pulley? It all makes a difference.
