Members: Thanks again for the tips on my cluster removal and painting, worked out very well. Now onto bulb replacement. Having never done this before now that I have the cluster out and ordered a complete set of new bulbs from Lectric Ltd. Is it advisible to replace all the bulbs, re-connect the ignition and headlight switch(s) with cluster still out and re-connect the battery and turn on the power and see if ALL the bulbs WORK before plugging them into the cluster and re-installing the cluster. I just thought it would be wise to check them to see if they illuminate before installing the cluster rather than find out 1 or 2 bulbs do not work........Then again maybe this will not work without some of the wires grounded, etc. Your best advice is appreciated...Keith #47865

Check to make sure the blinker bulbs are actually GE 257's, not a substitute. If no the GE version, get a couple, it will keep you from redooing the job later.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: C2 Cluster is out - bulb replacement query
Keith,
I asked the same question when I did my cluster a few years ago. Remember portions of your 66 dash harness are unfused so you run the risk of a short with all those wires dangling. I ended up testing the bulbs with a 12v battery (2 lantern batteries) then installed in the sockets.
Use care around the capacitor connections they are fragile
Don't forget the cluster ground at the top.

Re: C2 Cluster is out - bulb replacement query
Bill, On the 257's. I think there is a problem with my 63 257's. Only one of the two bulbs flash. I have to study the manuals to figure out what the scoop is. The judges didn't deduct for it but aren't both of the 257's supposed to flash on and off. I am referring to the headlights and emergency brake 257's on my 63 for those of you that don't know. Thanks, John D.- Top

Yes. both flash on the 63-66 cars, 67 was different. If the bulb lights and does not flash, then the defect is in the bulb. If it does not light, then (assuming not burned out) the problem is in the circuit.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: C2 Cluster is out - bulb replacement query
Keith,
I would bench check all of the Lectric Limited (made in china or who knows) bulbs with a 12v battery, battery charger, or a trickle charger. Be carfeful though!
Also test the bulbs you took out. If they are GE and are still bright I'd reuse them.
I also found that the substitute non-GE 257 bulbs, seem to flash a lot slower than the GE 257. The flashing mechanism is in the bulb itself, as it warms up, it flashes faster. Only one on my 67, but two on other years.

Re: C2 Cluster is out - bulb replacement query
Bill,I thought that was the correct answer. Well I'll put that item on the punch list for things to do on the 63 FI car. I used to call it the little white car but got all kind of slack by Cranky and others so now I just call it the 63 FI car. Wonder who I got those bulbs from??? hmmmm. hee. John D.- Top
