    oil from trans inspection plate

I've just completed a motor rebuild on my 4-spd 65 SB. All I did on the trans was to replace the oil. Everything is back together now and I notice that a small drop of what appears to be tranny oil forms at the low point of the bellhousing, coming from behind the inspection cover. It never drips to the floor but if I wipe it off, it's there again in a day or two. I think the trans was tight before the rebuild (and it worked perfectly)with apparently good seals but it's tough to say due to all the gunk and oil that was on the 40 year motor. Is it normal to expect any oil there. My gut tells me no....

    Any info appreciated,

If you did nothing to the tranny, it's not uncommon for you to have seepage from the grease seal around the input shaft. If it's a higher mileage tranny and you only have what sounds like seepage, your in good shape.

When you go from seepage to leakage, then I'd start planning on a freshening of the tranny seals if all else is still mechanically operating properly and your only dealing with drips.

If your into a spotless appearing power plant and drivetrain, then it's your call if you either want to or can afford to spent the denaro.

The lowest part of the transmission that has a hole in it is at the front where the counter shaft goes into the transmission. With your cleaning and adding new oil, there could be a possibility that the leak is coming from the countershaft location. There may me some information in the archives of where someone was able to seal over the location with good results. Other than that, a boring and bushing of the case.

There's no grease seal on the input shaft on a 4-speed; the leakage/seepage is most likely from the countershaft hole in the front face of the case.

The common countershaft leak on both T10 and Muncie transmissions has an easy fix.
With the transmission on the bench elevate the front and put a block under it. Clean around the countershaft with lots of thinner and dry throughly. Then spread a thin layer of silicone sealer over it.
Let cure and put back in car. I have done a few and they don't leak.
If the case is badly worn where the countershaft comes through it will need to be repaired.
