    C3: LS6 starter?

What is the correct Delco model number for the '71 LS6 w/M22 starter?

    TIA

      Addendum

By the way, don't be confused by some sources indicating that the GM #1108381 was used for 1971 with M-22. The GM #1108381 WAS used for 1971 with M-22 but ONLY when the M-22 was used with an LT-1 engine as part of the ZR-1 package. The 1108381 was NOT used with LS-6 and M-22. That's because the LS-6 with M-22 used a 14" flywheel, requiring a starter motor with the configuration of the 1108400. The 1108381 is configured for use with the 12-3/4" flywheel used with ZR-1.

1971 with ZR-2 with M-22 also used the 1108400 starter since it used a 14" flywheel.

The 1108400 and 1108381 starters are nearly the same EXCEPT for nose piece and armature.

        Re: Addendum

Thanks, Joe. Reason I ask is that I have a 1108381 starter with a March '71 date. John Pirkle said it's only the second or third one he's seen in all his years in the business - guess that means it's a rare bird. Since I don't have the date correct unit on my '70 ZR1, I thought I'd use it until I can find a date/# correct unit for my car. I was just curious if it could be used for the LS6 as well as I'd gladly trade the unit for a date correct 1108351 starter that my application requires.

As always, thanks for your input.

Well, you could use that starter; it should be 100% functional for you.

Of course, I suppose if a starter is "incorrect" it doesn't really matter how "incorrect" it is. So, you might want to just store this one for future sale or trading.

You can obtain a GM #10496870 which is a rebuilt starter of the configuration you need. It will be just like the original starter and the 1108381 that you have EXCEPT for "numbers" and "dates". As I've said many times before, the only difference between a Big $$$$ original starter and a $75 rebuild is the "number" and "date" on the frame. That's it. Otherwise, the configuration will be the same.
