    C3 Steering Support Screws

I'm re-assembling my 69 coupe and have mis-placed a few screws/bolts. Moving a household with a completely disassembled car is quite an exercise in organization, but this is a story for another time.

I would like to get a description of the two screws that attach the heavy cast steering support bracket to the underside of the dash. They are IDed in the AIM as GM # 3847962. I believe they engage weld nuts on the metal surround at the base of the windshield.

    Thanks and Happy Holidays.

    Craig,

Looking in the 1972 AIM, I see the bolt # you reference, along with the bracket you describe.

Going to the 1983 edition of the parts book, the parts group (6.760) that contains that bracket lists a 'bolt, col supt brkt (7/16-18 x 5/8)', service part #3928894, which may be what you need.

I don't find that size bolt listed in my Oct. 1988 Standard Parts Catalog. It may be because that bolt was not considered a standard part, but instead an actual production part. Or, I may be totally off-base here; others may have better information for you.

I can't find any specs on these bolts. However, I can tell you that they are replaced by GM #9437847 which are still available from GM.

For my late 70, those screws are 5/16" NC X 1 1/4" long with pointed ends.

They are apparently indented hex head, with an integral plain washer. Finish is black phosphate. The head stamps on my 70, and quite possibly for your 69, is ELH with the stem of the L forming the left hand side of the H, surrounded by two concentric circles, and with three radial lines at 6, 9, and 12 o'clock.

Four screws are used, with the top two threading into weld nuts in the body frame as you surmised. I can't determine the disposition of the bottom two screws, but it will probably be obvious when you position the bracket.
