    1957 Hood Release Cables

I like things to work as they were intended, but after 50 years they often don't. When I pull the hood release to open the hood, I have to push the handle in. According to the operations manual for C1's the springs on the female hood latches should retract the wire in the belden cable. I pulled the cable assembly and handle out of the car and notice that the wires in the cables seem to be binding. Is there anyway to effectively lubricate these cables so that the wire will retract under spring pressure? I hate to buy a new hood release assembly.

    Art,

I have to push in the hood release on my 57 also.

This may be caused by kinks in the wire or the belden cable or both, introduced by years of people doing "things" to them. You also need to look for rust on the wire.

If you are willing to spend a lot of time "getting the kinks out" you can improve the operation. After working on the kinks I sprayed the whole thing with WD-40 and worked them back and forth to work any rust loose several times. Did all this out of the car.

I still have to push my hood release in.

      Art,
Assuming that the cables are not too rusty the best way that I've found to lubricate them is to hang the assembly with the handle down and using CRC, KROIL or your favorite lube inject or apply it to the wire at the top and let it run down into the cable. This can sometimes take a couple of days depending on how quickly it takes the lube. Try not to over apply as it will weep out for a while. Do not re install until it stops dripping. I've saved real bad ones by first immersing them in Parts cleaner for a day or two and then appling lube. Good luck Rich

Thanks for the tips, Verle and Rich. By the way, what kind of fasteners are supposed to be used to fasten the hood release bracket to the bottom of the dash? The ones that were on my '57 were pan head slotted with lock washers and nuts. It this correct?
