    Jeff:

I recently inquired about a similar situation for my 73 at one of the better restoration houses in my area as I have a 70 frame as well. They said it would work and there were only very minor differences between that aspect of the car. Probably the biggest is whether the frame is for a manual or automatic. Automatics had a removable trans crossmember. Manuals were welded in place.

I think that if it will work in my 73 it should definitely work in your 72 as there were LESS changes between a 70 and 72 than between a 70 and 73. I have not done the switchover yet though. It's one thing for somebody to SAY it works, and another to actually SEE that it works. Perhaps there are others out here who have actually done this.

    Hope this helps -

    Pat

Re: Difference between 70 and 72 Frame?

Differences between the 70 and the 72 frame are unknown to me specifically, although the body appearance is the same I don't know of any changes like there was between the 68 and the 69 frame where two steel braces were added onto the 69's fame at the rear "kick-up" area that continued after 69.
The 73 frame can be different, don't have the specifics on the frame body locations. In 73 the Corvettes began using rubber body mounts instead of the 68-72 solid aluminum type. I do know from changing the body mounts on my 70 from the solid type to the 73-82 rubber body mounts that the body did sit about 1/4 inch higher with properly torqued body mounts after the change over.
From this change over the body mount locations on the 73-82 frames could be welded lower on the frame than on the 68-72 frame. This information could probably be attained from a 72 service manual and a 73 service manual from the frame dimensions.

I used a 74 frame on a 72 I did and it was a direct bolt up. Every hole was the same and I needed to only run a tap through the threads for the rear bumpers. There was a few really minor differances but nothing that would or will affect the end result in actual performance. You should have not probem doing what your talking about.

          Ron,

Did you use the 1973 + rubber body mounts or the 1972 and earlier aluminum ones?

            Terry,

I used the aluminum ones. The car went together great with no grief what so ever. Door gaps etc fit well. After thinking a little more about it today, I did have to drill two holes and weld on the backing nuts in or on the frame horns for the extra bolts for the front bumper mounts on each side. Other than that it was a direct bolt up. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the rear cross member still had the backing nuts and access holes in it for the previous years rear bumper mounting assemblies.

Re: Difference between 70 and 72 Frame?

I just was wondering, before I deframe my 68 car of the 70 frame, I bought three new (well old) cars a 71 (Rough-parts), a 72 car(needs frame so bad that the rear diff is broke off the frame) and a 72 car(complete minus nose) with door pillars that move verticle with that all so cool sound of crunchy crunch.
The 70 frame will go to the 72 and my beloved 68 will wait even longer.
the front frame horns, not the extentions are way diff from the 68 to 70. thanks jc
