Painting chassis and underhood black - I need...?

Ok - searched the archives, found a significant number of topics about the correct and less correct brands, finishes etc. (I am considering Eastwoods products btw).

But my questions are more basic; how much chassis black would one normally use on painting the full chassis (and related components that are also chassis black - if any) of a 68 corvette - 2 qt, a gallon, more? And how to apply - spray gun or rattle can?

Same question for the underhood black.

I have absolutely no painting experience so please be gentle with me. Thanks as always,

    Erik

3 to 4 liter would be more than enough or 8 to 10 spray cans
and the most easy way to do for you would be to paint with spray cans

you can buy these localy in the netherlands no need to buy this in the states

best way to go would be to let the chassis and chassis parts
sand blasted and let them paint it in an epoxy primer

so you only need to paint it semi gloss black

i did the same i used Rust-o-leum satin black

Quanta and Eastwood both have frame paint, the Eastwood product seems to be a tad more shiny to me. I think 2 qts. would be sufficient. I've used SEM 39143 Trim Black for the firewall and inner fenders which is an excellent product. Eastwood also makes a lacquer product called Underhood Black which really looks nice on the underside of the hood and on the inner fenders and firewall and is available in spray bombs or quarts. I like the finish better when using a spray gun.

        Hi Eric,

        Got your e-mail too.
For any coating, it's likely going to be "about" 2 quarts. For a base such as the Rust Encapsulator you can brush it on, and then spray the frame with the aerosols. If you or a friend has access to the correct equipment, however, you'll find better quality topcoats can generally be applied with a spray can vs. rattle can aerosol.

Realize that some parts of the chassis such as A-arms are quite glossy, and trailing arms are usually halfway between the glossy A-arms and the eggshell gloss of the frame.

I've used the Underhood Black a couple of times. Excellent product! Again, if you have the equipment buy it in the quart and spray it on.

          Eric...

If you go with the eastwood products, make sure you follow their instructions with regard to when you can recoat. Otherwise, it will pull up the previous coat as their warning indicates.

I have found anything available with the SEMS label on it is hard to beat, just ordered a new supply of Black Trim Paint and Etching Primer from Eastwood.
