    original 67 day/night mirror maybe?

After reading several posts about replacing the mirror glass I decided to do this little project during winter storeage of the car. The glass came out of the rubber trim piece as described but things looked different than my interpretation of the rest of the description. The rubber trim piece channel is wider on the upper edge of the mirror housing than the bottom. The mirror was not glued on the upper and side edges but on the entire back of the mirror except for about a 1/4 inch around the entire perimeter of the rubber trim piece. The mirror glass also seemed to be thicker on the upper portion where the channel is wider and thinner at the bottom where the channel is narrower. When I turn the knob the whole mirror assembly rotates on the pivot ball, the mirror did not move within the gasket. My guess is this is either an repo mirror which is made differently or bubba put a different mirror glass in before I acquired the car. My question is can I still install the Paragon replacement mirror glass and will it function correctly and if not is there a supplier that I might get the correct mirror glass to replace the one I just destroyed. I am including pictures I have taken but they may appear in multiple posts.

            Looks like the real deal.

            Wayne,

As far as the housing goes for a later 67 day-night mirror. I've replaced the glass on two of these originals without breaking the original glass. All you need to do is to heat the neoprene surround with a hair dryer to soften it, then roll and pry the mirror edges out from the surround.

As far as I remember there was no glue in the back of the the glass (maybe a little along the edges) and that the surround held the original glass in place. If glued, it would have disturbed the coating on the back of the glass.

Yes, both original glasses were thicker on one side than the other to match the grooves in the surround. I used repro glass, one from Zip on my 67 original, and one from Paragon on another original I acquired. Both repro glasses were identical to the original glass and thicker on one side.

They are supposed to work the way you describe. The only place I found glue was between the SS frame and the back of the neoprene surround, and then only along the top and the sides, with no glue along the bottom. (If my memory serves me right, it has been a few years).

If yours was glued along the back of the glass, it was probably replaced by the previous owner. I know I replaced my original glass in mine.

            Hopes this helps,

              Thanks Jerry,

I think bubba glued the replaced mirror glass so now I will know not to do the same. I didn't have to remove the rubber surround to remove the glued in mirror as I had smashed it which I would probably had to do anyway because it had been glued in place. I will order a new mirror glass and heat the rubber up as you have suggested before installing it.

                Wayne,
I will check tomorrow when I go over to the shop. I just took the glass out of two 67 mirrors last week but can't remember how they were glued (CRS). As mentioned earlier, took a heat gun warmed the rubber, then I took a small putty knife and slid it beneath the rubber edge and back of mirror. Glass came right out. I am getting ready to order replacements tomorrow.
