    C-3 Seatbelt Warning System

Before pulling seats, consoles, and dash on this 1974 C-3, are there some preliminary troubleshooting steps to begin with to diagnose the seatbelt warning system (no light or buzzer), e.g., 20 amp fuse location, process for testing buzzer, and any other obvious and accessable check points, etc. Thanks.

Check the fuse first in the fuse block with all the fuses. I would then start by checking to see if the wires are pluged in under the seats and that the switches in the bottom of the seats are working. Then take the buzzer out and test it with the battery. The switches on the doors are often the problem.
Their is no one spot that is the problem most of the time so get your tester out and start checking for unhooked wires or bad switches.

The warning buzzer was PN 6262663 used for '72-77 applications. It simply plugs into the dash harness' socket. Note, the socket & buzzer are keyed with a 'release' catch that needs to be opened to remove the buzzer...

Once you've got the buzzer removed, take it to a bench where you've got a solid 12-14 VDC power supply and simply connect the two terminals, one to +VCC the other to battery ground. It ought to buzz as long as it receives power.

From there, you can trouble shoot the balance of the circuit path. Typical failure 'culprits' include seat belt switch (embedded in the floor beneath the seats--that's the low point in the cockpit susceptible to collecting rain water), the door jam switch(s) and the ignition switch's key minder switch.

Jack, thanks for the insights. I had received another reply on this topic and asked a couple of other questions via email. I thought I'd post the summary of this information for the benefit of others, should anyone do a future search through the archives. What I learned was that in '74, the switch is in the seatbelt sleeve, not in the retractor as on older 72-73's. I also learned that the seat belt buzzer will buzz only when an automatic car is in drive and the key is on. On a 4-speed, the E-brake must be all the way off for the buzzer to work...so this is another switch I need to check. Thanks again. Ray
