    62 steering column removal

Today I finally decided to remove my steering column (box) for a rebuild. I followed the instructions in ST-12. When I got to the final step #12, I did as stated but I could not rotate, move or by any other means remove the steering column. Finally we took off the left hand exhaust manifold and were able to remove the column.
I thought the pitman should have been removed prior to column removal but it is removed in step #1 of Dissassembly. I would have removed it but I could not get a puller on it in the car.
Did I do something wrong or is the ST-12 incorrect?
    Thanks in advance.

    Bruce,

I removed my 59's(same as 62) entire column about 10 years ago to rebuild the box. I had the same problem, and removed the pitman arm to get it past the manifold. Can't recall exactly, but it was quite tricky the get the pitman off. I think I had to jockey the loosened column assembly around to get a puller on the arm to remove it. I know for sure I did not remove the manifold.

        Bruce...

Be sure to "mark" the pitman arm locaton before removal. Make sure the steering box spline groves are clean and free of burrs, the use of a short wrench helps if you install it after you have installed the gear box.

I just removed the box from my 62 and had to remove exhaust manifold to get it out also. I just chalked it up to human error, nothings perfect, not even the ST-12

            Terry,
            Thanks for the info.
Getting it out has turned out to be the easy part. The last guy apparently took the pitman arm out using a pickle fork and messed up the housing so it has to be filed to get out the bearing.
Also the large amount of wear on the internal parts is amazing.
It was definately time for a rebuild.
The car will be a pleasure to drive when its done.

Yeah I can't wait to see the improvement in mine, just waiting on firewall insulation so I can begin to put it back on the road.
