    frame rust

I own a 66 . I am replacing the gas tank. The crossmember has some rust on inside & outside. How do you determine how bad rust damage is? Do magnetic depth gauges work?

    Re: frame rust

You are probably going to have to check the rust by:

    1. tapping firmly with a hammer to see if there's solid metal there judging by the sound of the tapping in similar places that aren't rusted compared to the areas where you have concerns

    or

    2. tap firmly on a center punch in that area to see if the punch goes through the rusty metal.

    or

    3. chipping or grinding through the rust to find out how bad it is.

If it looks bad, you probably ought to do something to try to save it, assuming it's still savable (and it may well be, rust often looks worse than it is) before
it gets any worse, cause it'll just keep deteriorating.

If you are only concerned with the bolt-on crossmember supporting the tank, it can easily be removed and de-rusted by the chemical dipping method, or you can purchase a new replacement from parts vendors such as Long Island Corvette, or locate a solid used one.
