    Axel Differential housing Identification

I have read the archives in reference to Positraction axles, axel flanges and housings. It might be because I am Irish, but I am still confused. This is the first time that I have removed and disassembled a C-1 (1961) rear differential-axel assembly. The assembly has the posi caution ring and vent line. The carrier that I removed is a non-posi 336.1 unit. The Axel bearings are Hyatt 1542-WA and the axles have a yellow marking paint.

    Would anyone have pictures:

    1. of the baffles for a posi housing?

    2. Axel flange for posi and non-posi?

    3. any other pictures of importance?

I have purchased a series 3 carrier date coded correctly for my January 61 car. There is no code on the right flange. Why would this carrier not have a ratio code?

    Thanks for any information!

    Ray...

I have seen Corvette rear axles where the vent pipe, circular filler plug tag and a axle ratio ID metal tag were added to make it look like a positraction axle...some solid axle cars have passenger car carriers as replacements from past problems. The cast character "P", the casting number 3789812 and the casting date appear on original 61 positraction carriers. Late 1960 units had two fiction discs, two fiction plates plus a belleville plate, Earlier 1960 were simlar to 1957-59 except for a change in the friction plates.
    Hope this helps a little...

Ray, posi axle housing have a "v" shaped oil dripper over the ring gear and 2 doughnut washers welded just inside the axle tubes on each side. Haven't paid any attention to the flanges. Also, from '59-'62 there was a .1 spacer used between the wheel bearing and the housing flange to compensate for smaller bearing width. Have axle lengths from the part manuals and some photos. Send me an e-mail and will send them to you. Gary....

Back in 1968 pedal to metal in my 63 SS going across some railroad tracks from a stop I broke some gear teeth in my 63's posi unit. A friend had a third member from a 55 Chev that he gave me and I used it. Change out was no problem.
