C3 wiper motor

Is the can on the wiper motor supposed to be painted black or left bare metal? Mine looks like it had some black paint at some point. I have a 72.

Bare is correct. Some of the vendors repair these and then paint them to identify the company. I have seen rebuilt wipers for sale in blue and black.

The paint can relatively easily be stripped off to reveal what may be a very nice appearing wiper motor underneath.

Wiper motor from my 71 LS5. I beleive it to be original to the car.
