    Re: C2--Find the VIN

Gretchen, The foil tag would not be on the door, but on the rear of the door opening (or jamb) on the body, on the driver's side. The 1966 Corvette VIN will alway's have the "S", as it designated the St. Louis assembly plant, where the complete car was built. But, there were to 2 body source's, AOS (A body) or St. Louis (S body), that would be on the Trim Tag. Your original VIN should be shown as 194376S1xxxxx, for a 1966 coupe. I have some 1966 Trim Tag info available. What is the AOS body number (shown as A-????). Dave

      Gretchen-----

The fact that the VIN tag has been removed is a VERY good reason to be suspicious. VIN tags for 1966 were attached by rivets and the tag, itself, was stainless steel. The rivets don't "fall out" and the tag will never "corrode away". So, if it's missing it means that someone removed it. I can't think of a single, legitimate reason for someone doing this.

I think you should make every effort to determine the frame VIN stamping derivative. With this and knowing the car's year model and body type, you can "reconstruct" the complete original VIN of the car. If it matches the VIN on whatever paperwork you have, that will be a good thing. If it doesn't, that's VERY bad.

        Dave-----

From what I've read into the various posts above, it appears that there is some sort of paperwork which includes a VIN with an "S". If it were a state-issued VIN it's almost always of a completely different series of characters and usually doesn't even resemble an original VIN series. Of course, it's possible, I suppose, that the state-issued VIN includes an "S" and that's what Gretchen is referring to.

Gretchen, if you know that the transmission is original to the car you can check the vin # on the transmission with the title to see if they match.

Wayne, is that also true for a 67? Could be I've been looking in the wrong place too.

              Re: C2--Find the VIN

Joe, I assumed they had the title, which would have either the orignal VIN or a State-Issued VIN number on it. I did not know which state the car was titled in. I should have stated that my experience is with Michigan, which has used the foil tag method on the door jamb since the mid-late 1970's. But, as you stated, other states may be different. I was referring strictly to Michigan. A lot of times, I have seen the original VIN number used, on the foil tag, IF the original VIN can be determined. In that case, it will usually have MI preceding the original VIN number and/or stating MI replacement serial number, somewhere below it on the foil tag. If the original VIN could not be determined, it would normally be issued a VIN for an assembled vehicle, which could be an all together different number, as you stated, OR a partial VIN derivative, taken from the main part of the original body, engine, trans, etc. I've seen many variations in MI state-issued VIN's over the years. FWIW. Dave

Does the car have it's ProtectOplate booklet? Does it's Serial # match the title, just another clue.

this is a photo of the VIN # on the top of the frame on my 67. The #4 Body mount is the one toward the rear of the rear fender opening left side.

Gretchen, A 1966 coupe with an A-0937 body number, should be in the low 5000 VIN range. Most likely it has a C27 body build date, stamped in the upper LH corner of the Trim Tag. The approx Serial # (VIN), should be right around #5250 or so, shown as 194376S105250. Hope this helps. Dave

                          Gretchen,
Dave has given an excellent description. I would add that you will need:
                          1.- clean rags
2.- I like brake spray for cleaning the area. Buy it at AUTOZONE or any parts store.
3.- a large flat head screwdriver.

Soak rag with spray and place on end of screwdrier to clean the top of the frame. IF it is very rustry you will have trouble. But this should make it easier.

Thank you. We'll definitely try this. The frame doesn't appear too rusty, so hopefully this work!

If it turns out to be rusty or otherwise hard to read after you clean it, you can try a couple of other things:

                              1) A small wire brush that you can buy at hardware stores. These are similar to a tooth brush but with steel or brass bristles;

                              2) A small wire wheel on a Dremel Tool. This will make "quick work" of cleaning the frame. Small wire wheels on Dremel Tools are one of my "secret weapons" for all sorts of things.
