1973 Lower Steering Column Play / Bushing

    Hello all -

Well, pulled the leaky, nasty steering box today and noticed the steering column seems to have a bit of play in it - not so much front to back as much as side to side. How much play should there be? I suspect less than there is. It is difficult for me to tell exactly how much play but I'll take a guess and say about .005 side to side. The shaft does not move at all if I push forward or back.

I noticed whilst perusing Dr. Rebuild there is a lower steering column bushing a couple of retainers and a clip that I assume holds the bushing and retainers in place. Is this replaceable without pulling the steering column? I checked my service manual and it appears all the service is done with the column out but this looks like it might?? be able to be done on the car.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance -

I think .005 play is ok at this location.
