    C5 Battery

Help me out here...my 2000 C5 sits alot with trickle charger (smart technology) but the battery is not holding its charge in this 20 degree weather which neither it nor I are accustomed to. Went out this afternoon to shart and it was a no show. Time to replace battery?

    Tom,
If your battery is the factory installed original, I'd replace it. Six to seven years is pretty good service. You might first try a different charger. The trickle/smart chargers use solid state components which can be affected by temperature or just plain fail.

I strongly suspect that you need a new battery. However, you could try putting it on a regular charger (i.e. 10 or 20 amp) and see if it brings it up. If it does, but the same problem crops up again, then you definitely need to forget this one and get a new one.

Often times, it's MUCH better to just replace a battery on a periodic basis and not wait until it fails. When it fails, it might be in a circumstance that's going to create a nerve-wracking situation.

most oem batteries last about 3 years . my 2001 110,000 mile truck still had its orig. I changed it this fall just to be safe . Be sure to check your cable bolts for corrosion .Leakage at the battery terminal is the major cause of battery failure....Bill

          Tom,

My 2002 coupe had its original battery for just over 5 years, that is way longer than most make it. You've done extremely well with one over 7 years.

The original battery in my 2000 hard top didn't even make it a year. After hearing stories of the original batteries leaking acid onto the computer mounted below it, I replaced it with an Optima.
