Valve cover engine suffix sticker on '69

I posted this on Corvette Forum and got some great info. Thought I'd try here and see if there were any more opinions.

I'm trying to locate the correct engine code sticker for the rear of the passenger side valve cover of my 69 and have a few questions.
    1) According to the NCRS TIM&JG (2nd edition) the sticker should be 1 1/8 inches by 2 1/4 inches, black letters on a yellow sticker. What I see in Paragon's and Corvette Centrals catalogs are defintely not those dimensions - they appear to be much more square. Does anyone know if the dimensions in the TIM&JG are correct?
    2) I found out from Chuck Sangerhausen that one of these stickers is pictured in Dobbins' Fact Book on pg. 82. However, that sticker appears to be yellow letters on a black background with a yellow border. It's a b&w photo, but it defintely doesn't look like the TIM&JG describes it. To further complicate matters, I found a supposedly "correct" 'MR' sticker (see my next question), but it is white with red letters. Any thoughts on what this sticker should look like? Is it possible that the sticker for an L88 would be different?
    2) My second problem is locating the correct code. My stamping is 'LV' (L88 w/ M40). 'MS' also appears to be correct according to the TIM&JG, and according to the '69 Stingray Guidebook 'MR' is also correct. Does the sticker always match the stamping on the block or would the 'MS' sticker be OK for my car? This question may be moot, because I can't seem to find ANY of those three stickers, but it would be nice to know exactly what I should be searching for.

    Thanks in advance!

    Jon,

The sticker should match the stamping - at least it has in every example I've seen.

I'm away from home so I'll check on the Dobbins 1969 sticker, but the example he shows for 1972, as well as every original sticker I've ever seen or have a photo of, is yellow with black letters.

Let me know if you need more information.

Interesting. The photo you referred to is on page 177 and does appear to be black letters on a yellow sticker, almost the opposite of the photo on page 82. Could these vary by year and/or motor?

Any sticker is OK for your car because they are not judged!

That's what I thought, and in fact in the TIM&JG on page 52 it states that "No points are to be given or deducted for the presence or absence of this label."

Yet on the judging sheets in the mechanical section, under 'Valve Covers' there is a line item for "Engine suffix code label" with 2 originality points and 1 condition point. I lost all three at the 2001 Western Regional. Unfortunately, I didn't know this until well after the meet when I started researching my point deductions.

Sorry Bob, they are judged in 1968-1972. I can't speak for other years.

              John,

So far, from 1970 on, they're black letters on a yellow background. I haven't any true known original pre-1970 examples, and its tough as repros have been out a few years and it is muddying the waters, so to speak.

These stickers rarely even made it to the 100 mile mark on these cars, although my friend washed his down the drain on his 72 a couple of years ago at about 60,000 miles, but the valve covers had been off the engine for quite a while prior to that. Of course, I found it out much later and never got a photo of it.

Both Terry M and Joe L don't remember the stickers, and they are original owners of their cars.

                Check TIM&JG third edition

                Jon,

The most recent edition of the 1968-1969 TIM&JG, Summer 2001, does not contain that wording. See the third edition page 42.

                  Re: Check TIM&JG third edition

Good point. I guess I should order one of the new manuals before I do too much more work

But it does sound like I need to figure out what to stick on that valve cover.

                  Thanks,

Right on Terry, I don't have the revision yet. Anyway I kind of put these "super rare" labels in the catagory of those part number sticker/labels found on original mufflers and exhaust tips which aren't judged (as yet).

The new judging sheets do list the engine code label. It is worth 2 points for originality and 1 for condition. (Sorry I was slow to respond. My computer has been ailing.)
