Re: valve covers
Unfortunately, the SAME casting number was used on all versions of the Corvette cast aluminum valve covers. So, you have to KNOW the part history, what to look for, in order to determine the correct year(s) of application....
The first version used 9-fins with low relief Corvette script. When FI was introduced in 1957, the sides were manually ground down to provide extra clearance.
Then, the covers changed from 9 to 7-fin/rib cosmetics. That was followed by a change the height (relief) of the Corvette script.
In late '59, the mounting holes changed from a staggered to a straight-across pattern. Finally, in the '66 model year, the casting mold was damaged and repaired. That, left a line of 'flash' visible through the center of the 'O' character in Corvette.
Bottom line, you do NOT buy/sell these valve covers based on their CAST number! There are too many variations over time for the cast number to have any meaning....- Top

Re: valve covers
Sal,
The "493" cast alum cover is correct for late 59 through all 67 solid lifter small block applications. Covers produced after March of 66 will have a noticible line running vertically through the "o" in the Corvette script.
Valve covers on 65's should not have a casting line through the "o" and should look like this:
