Is there anyone out there that could give me some info on the correct camshaft, mechanical lifter setup for a 270hp 1958. I would like to bring the engine back to it's nearly original setup. Also are there any companies out there that sell this setup. Thanks for any information that you provide.
Chuck
federal mogul part # CS113R is the correct camshaft BUT the edge orifice lifters that were original may not be available. the F/M part# AT840R is for the edge orifice lifters but they may not available. the lifter that is available is F/M part# AT992 which is a piddle valve lifter which allows more oil to the rocker arms
From what I can tell the AT840R is no longer manufactured. Federal-Mogul says that the AT992 is the replacement for the GM #5231585 which was originally used for your application. However, as clem mentions, the original lifter was an edge-orifice type and the AT992 is a piddle valve type.
GM never replaced the edge orifice type with the piddle valve type for SERVICE. However, Federal-Mogul says that their AT992 piddle valve type specifically replaces the GM #5231585 edge orifice type. So, I'd have to say that, functionally, I would fully expect it to be ok. It may be that Federal-Mogul has made some sort of change in the design of the lifter such that the AT992 can replace both the GM edge orifice and piddle valve types.
Clem, I always recommend the FM #CS 113R withe the AT 992 lifters. I am sure you know the history of this cam. It started off life as the TRW TP113. Then it went to the Sealed Power cam CS113 R then Federal Mogul took over. Now the box reads. Speed Pro CS113R, then Sealed Power. then by FM. Same cam. Three owners over the year. Maybe four. My 63 has that Cam and lifters and works fine going off and on the trailer. Seriously I have recommended this cam so much I should get a commission on each one sold. Probably sold a 1000 of them for the company. In the olden days when the Duntov 097 was available from Chevy my cheap friends used the TRW TP113 because it was 1/2 the price. I think you know some of them. One guy lives in Delmont, PA. John D.
