    puel pump fitting

Any thoughts on how tight to torque the brass 90-degree fitting that feeds the fuel pump into the aluminum pump housing ? It seems quite loose when pointing straight up (where it should be, about), yet it starts getting VERY tight 1/2 turn later, with another 1/2 turn or so to go. Thread sealer a good idea on brass/aluminum ? I would think not. I have a '65 SB

    Thanks,
    Mark

Torque the fitting to 10 lb/ft. There is no need to use sealer on the threads since the threads are "Dryseal". However, if you wish to use sealer or teflon tape, it won't hurt anything.

Thanks Joe. I'll try the sealer since I get the chills about stripping the threads. I think to get the tip of the brass fitting pointing up where it should be would require more than 10 lb-ft (seat of the pants)

I used the teflon tape on mine and it worked great, helping me to get it on tight and in the right position to received the fuel line. Without the tape, it leaked even when tight!

best to use teflon paste, not the teflon tape variety which can interfere with needle/seat function in the carb. mike

            Mike-----

I never apply teflon tape so that any "overhangs" the threads. My procedure is always to leave the last 1/8", or so, of the threads free of tape. For house plumbing, it doesn't matter, though.

In other words, a piece of the tape breaks free and runs with the fuel to the carb?

yes. plus any visible teflon tape, on the judging field, will cause a minor point deduction as teflon tape wasn't used at St louis. use the paste if you must, then take a narrow clean paint brush and wipe away any paste excess after you've tightened the fitting.Judges won't detect paste if excess removed. mike

Dr. Mike, Agree with you 100%. That tape comes off and get under the needle and seat of the float and you know the rest. I threw my roll away long ago.
Here is my trick. Loctite #545 hydraulic sealant. Works like a charm. Shake the plastic container before using it. I apply it with a q-tip keeping back abou 1or 2 threads from the end of the fitting. Then I let the job sit for a day or so. That stuff is a miracle cure. Not available in auto stores. Industrial tool supplys like Travers. MSC, McMaster Carr, etc.
When done wipe the excess off with q-tips so the judges don't see it. I use Loctie 545 on vacuum fittings, fuel inlet fittings, etc on the old FI's. John P.S. You often see it on Ebay cheap. Otherewise it's about 30 buks.
