    Late C4 Jack

The jack to my newly acquired '96 convertible is missing. I have two questions:

    1) The GM part number for this jack
    2) Is there any date code or other special markings that would authenticate and date the jack?

    Thanx

The jack you seek was GM #10230427. It was used only for the 1995-96 model years, although it later became SERVICE for earlier C4. A photo of an NOS example [not for sale]of the 10230427 jack is shown below. This jack is GM-discontinued. As far as I can tell, there is no supercessive part number. However, even if there were a supercessive part number, I feel very confidant that its configuration would differ.

Here is a photos of the part number as can be found on the jack. GM got practical during the C4 model years and started indentifying a lot more parts with part numbers than they did earlier. You will find the part number on this jack on the top of the main saddle plate of the jack on the opposite end from the stirrup.

Below you will find the date code on the jack. In this case, it decodes to May 13, 1997 (7E13). The last digit "1" is likely a shift code or other manufacturing code. The date code will be found on the bottom of the jack, near the thrust bearing.

Jack you might find a good used one for your 96 at www.ContemporaryCorvettes.com , they have cars to part out. Was your lug wrench under the passenger seat and also come with the two attachments to use with the lug wrench, one attachment to remove the special secure lock nuts (not to be used with an impact wrench) and the other attachment used to remove the other four lug nuts from a wheel that can be use with an impact wrench? You have good information from Joe to get the right one for your 96.

              Floyd-----

This is strictly a hobby for me, so I've never accepted any compensation, whatsoever, my services.

As Gary mentioned, Contemporary Corvette in PA would be a good place to try for a jack. Another great source for C4 parts is Steve Arcoleo in New York. Steve specializes in parting out C4 and C5 Corvettes. He usually has a HUGE inventory of stuff. I'll bet he's parted out more than a few 96 Corvettes, and I'll bet he still has the jacks from most of them. His number is 718-967-0698.

                Re: Late C4 Jack

Thanks Gentlemen. With your information I did a bit more poking around and found the original "STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS". The wheel wrench is indeed missing but the securing wing nut and washer are still there. The storage tray is missing because one of the previous owners connected a stereo power booster inline with the rear speakers (which probably explains why the rear speakers no longer deliver any sound - yet another project). The foam insert that holds the jack and socket/lock key is still there. The original socket/lock key and lug attachment as described by Jim were in the center console storage compartment. So I guess I need to replace the Jack, Wheel Wrench and Storage Tray.

That leaves me with two more questions if you don't mind:

                1) The storage instructions have a hole punched in one of the corners. I would guess that this plastic coated sheet is supposed to be tethered to something (perhaps the jack itself). Do you know where this instruction sheet was stowed when shipped from the factory? Was it indeed tethered? If so, what was it tethered to and can you describe the tether?
                2) My car was #9304 with an assembly date of 12/19/05. What would you expect the date code on the jack to be for this car?

Re: Late C4 Jack - One More Question

Are there any markings or date codes on the wheel wrench that would date/authenticate it?

                  Thanks Again

                    Re: Late C4 Jack

Floyd the plastic coated sheet you refer to was attached to the jack. There was a rubber line used, one end went into a hole on the side of the jack just forward and a little lower than the rivet heads and of course the other end was attached to the plastic coated shee. My jacks date is C 612 1 and was bought in June 96. I am the original owner and this is the first time I have removed the jack. When you get your jack and install it in the foam holder you will need to hold up the electical wiring to position the jack in the foam holder. The plastic coated sheet lays on top of the jack. Never had a real reason to look at my factory lug wrench until reading your request. Discovered today they did not install one at the factory for my car.

                      >> Discovered today they did not install one at the factory for my car.

                      Ouch!!!

                      Jim,

Thanks for the response but I'm confused by date code on your jack. Do you know how this is decoded? According to Joe's post the format is YMDD 1, where Y=single numeric digit for year, M=single alfa digit for month and DD=two digit numeric day (the trailing one is superfluous or represents something like a shift code). If your date code had been "6C12 1" that would make sense to me (relative to the format supplied by Joe) - since that would be March 12th, 1996. March 12th happens to be my birthday! :-) Any chance you would sell me that jack? - just kidding of course. :-) Do you know the birth date of your car?

                      Thanx,

                      -Floyd-

                        Re: Late C4 Jack

Floyd the date on my jack given in my previous post is in the wrong order. The correct date is as you have posted it 6C12 1. Another correction to my post is about my jack handle. In just looking at the picture in my 96's owner manual and not reading what it said, I looked under the passenger seat for it. In checking the owners manual again I read what was on the page, "move the drivers seat forward". My jack handle was there just like it was installed at the factory. Also found two pennys and a nickel. It is not a daily driven car, actually sits in the garage a whole lot, only 660 miles last year on the highways. The date on the jack handle is 6B27 2 and both the jack and jack handle have stamped made in Canada. My 96 was built in June 96. The day is not on the window sticker or the door sticker where I found June 96.

                          Floyd-----

The handle/wrench is still available from GM under GM #14050029. This is the original part number for the piece and it should be identical to the original installed in your car. As Jim noted, the handle is date stamped with the same format as that used for the jack. For a correctly date-stamped piece, you might look to a used parts source. Or, ignore the date and purchase a new one. GM list is about 28 bucks.

The tray for the rear compartment is no longer available from GM. This is another piece that might be found from a used parts source like Steve Arcoleo.
