    1965 Steel Rims

How can I tell if the steel rims on my 1965 are original? Does anyone know what, and where, the markings or date coding are located? Thanks

GM, to see the marks and date codes the tire needs to be removed. They are on the inside of the rim.

But there are telltale signs on the outside. Please check the archives as several post on this were discussed containing pictures.

Greg -- I never have much luck searching the archives, so here's a few markers. Like Harry says, if the rubber is on, the external signs are the 2 anti-rotation nubs on either side of the valve stem; NO stamped characters on either side of the valve stem (two currently on eBay are SERVICE rims). The "GM" (in this case not your personal initials ) stamped on one of the raised ribs between the bolt holes. NO raised nubs on the inner raised ridge around the bolt holes (used to hold dog-dish hubcaps on other GM wheels). Backside; center section NOT riveted to outer rim.

Can email pics of any particular points.

I have a pair of these wheels dated 12 64 with the GM part number still attached. Part number confirms 65-66 Corvette steel wheel.

          These wheels are riveted.

What do I have here? Service replacements, even though they are correctly dated?

Ed -- with the sticker present, I'm tempted to say service, as I don't believe assembly line parts, as a general rule, had or needed them.

But then how to explain the 12_64 dating ? How about the other "under-the-rubber" markings ? (ie. the Kelsey Hayes made in USA round symbol, and that other round symbol [could never figure out what it meant], as well as the 15 x 5_1/2 JK stamping with the year and month very close by) ?

The '65 TIM&JG says welded steel construction.

Got the 15x5 1/2 JK marking, and the Kelsey Hayes. I'll double check everything this evening and let you know.

As usual, thanks so much to all for the input...I was wondering what those funky little nubs were by valve stem on my spare...I would like to see a date code...

Wheels on this auction are not 65/66 wheels. These have nubs to hold dog dish hubcaps unlike 65/6 wheels. Most likely 8080 service wheels.

                      Tracy,

Did 8080 service wheels have a welded or rivited center? These look to be welded.

All the ones I've seen are welded. *NM*
