In the process of restoring a 71 454 4 speed convertible without air. It currently has the idler assembly on it. Is that correct? An NCRS judge friend could not confirm that. Seems that we only know of that being on big blocks with air. Any thoughts?

Re: 71 idler assembly question
Kathy-----
1971 LS-5 without C-60 did not originally use an idler pulley. Could the car have originally been built with an idler pulley? Yes, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that a factory mistake occurred. However, it's certainly not typical of factory production. Unless one has excellent proof to the contrary, that is the basis on which the car will be judged.
If the idler assembly was added post-PRODUCTION, why would someone have done that? Very simple. By adding the idler assembly one converts the normally captive inner belt (which is one ROYAL PIA to replace) to a "3 point" belt with an adjustment at the idler. This makes belt replacement "INFINITELY" easier. Aside from issues of correctness, I would leave that idler right where it is.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
