    LIFTERS

YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO THINK i AM NUTS BUT I just purchased a 65 with the correct HH 365 motor after my first short ride one lifter began to become very loud took off the valve cover and tighten down on the rocker nut the tappets were quite for a short while but became noisey after a few minuets. Though the lifters were solid but not so sure now how do I tell if they are hydrolic or solid

    Re: LIFTERS

If a mechanical lifter cam is installed, at any crankshaft orientation about half the rocker arms should be loose. If you can't wiggle any of them, it's probably a HYDRAULIC lifter cam.

Unfortunately, many SHP mechanical lifter engines have been "rebuilt" with hydraulic lifter cams and gorilla valve springs, which can wear the lobes down quickly.

If it is a hydraulic lifter cam and a rocker arm is loosening, it could be a sign of a worn down lobe.

Could also be a rocker arm stud pulling out--either way you probably are going to have to have some not incidental work done to rectify the problem. Best case is that you have an old nut holding the rocker arm down, and that is backing off. I'd start there.
