    1971 Water Pump Number

I have a 71 small block. What is the correct # for the water pump for 71 vettes? I'm fairly certain mine is the original but want to confirm. Also, is there anyway to view this number without removing the fan/pump etc?

    Thank you,
    Greg

Probably visible with a mirror--or loosen fan and pulleys--pump removal is unnecessary. I don't have the number here at work, but it should be in your judging guide--if you don't already have that, you need to get it. (For a lot more info that just that!)

        Re: 3991399

It's tough to read the cast number, but Sal hit the nail on the head with 3991399. They're not all that common since passenger cars started changing over to 'long leg' vs. 'short leg' water pumps in that era. But, once you've seen a correct original, you don't need to read the cast number. The configuration of the water pump's 'snout' with its large reinforcing ribs tells the story...

Yes, the 3991399 was used only for 1971-E1972 Corvette small blocks and some MD/HD trucks of that period. Overall, it's one of the rarest of all Corvette waterpump castings.

It was the ONLY waterpump casting of short leg, large bearing, reinforced snout and no upper bypass fitting. So, as you say, it's very easy to ID without even looking at the casting number.
