67 Cluster - Cut Out Below Temp Gauge

Another question about my 67 cluster. There is heavy black cloth tape over an opening in the cluster housing below the temp gauge. Is this suppose to be there? Thanks.

    Kirk,

I think the round cutout below the temp gage is for an illumination bulb socket. Can't think of why it would be taped. Might explain your extra bulb on the left side.

Take a look at the picture in the last thread on the Cluster

      Jerry,

It's not on the flat back of the cluster but rather on the vertical wall (as the cluster is lying face down), just "below" the temp gauge. I will get my digital camera working and see if I can't take some pics. Thanks.

Yes, the tape was always there and started out white.

Do you know why it was done and what it was for?

            Kirk -

All '67 clusters had that piece of tape - AC applied it over an open slot in the wall of the casting to stop a light leak; the tape fix was cheaper than modifying the die-cast mold.

That's just cool! Guess my cluster still has its original tape. I'm glad that is the story because I was afraid bubba had done a chop job! Thanks as always.
