    C2 front parking lamp wire colors; revisited

    There is a number of postings in the archives on the colors of the 3 wires coming out of the front parking/turn signal lamps on mid-year cars. In one posting from Nov of 2007, John Hinckley says that for 66-67, the colors were white/purple/blue. The wire colors for the original lamps from my July build date '66 are light green/yellow/purple, with yellow in the middle. Of all the postings in the archives, there isn't one that lists light green/yellow/purple. A posting by David J on Feb 6, 2007 comes close with dark green/yellow/brown (or faded purple). The 1966 Chassis Service Manual and the AIM both say the colors were White/Purple/Light Blue, as John suggests. Has anyone done adequate research on this topic to nail down the different wire color variations that actually existed throughout the mid-year period, as opposed to what the AIM says? The 66 TIM&JG is silent on the wire colors, but one reads that judges make deducts based on the wire colors. For those judges who judge the wire colors, does anyone know what colors they look for on a '66 and why?

    Frustrated again...

    Gary:

    Jeff Cook judged my car at the Waco Regional. He is very knowlegable on C2 exteriors and he assured me that the Purple, White, Blue configuration was correct for a 65. This configuration does not agree with my 65 AIM???

    He would be an excellent source for a start to answer your question.

    His number is (419) 484-8388.

      Dear Frustrated

      I too have been frustrated by this subject. What makes it worst is that the wiring diagrams do not show the color of wires leaving the parking lamp until 1965. So that's good news for your car. If you look at the 65 Shop Manual (supplement) section 12-4, Fig 4 the correct (engineering) colors are shown. For others reference;

      65 Adds color of Parking Light harness to diagram as follows;

      B B

      PPL PPL

      DBL B/LBL

      The earlier C2's (63,64) only show the colors going to the connector on the wall.

      Now the service replacement and 66-67 used the W/PPL/LBL and I believe most of us agree on that one, however the 65 is where some trouble starts; It was reported that 65 is B/PPL/DBL for both, but nothing about the B/LBL instead of the DBL. So at present I only feel comfortable with the B/PPL/DBL for a 65, but I'm looking for the other on an original 65.

      Now a number of pn changes have happen on the light, in 7/64 pn is 910415 and in 10/65 pn is 910552 which I believe(?) is the service pn. I'm still trying to gather info on the changes. The good news is you have a 65 - the 64's have many changes and the 63's ooOOH

        Gary,
        Could it be that your wire colors are faded/changed due to age? My original 67 has light blue/white/purple at the plug in that order. Those are also the colors shown on the AIM wiring diagram. White could easily "yellow". Blue might change to "Light Green" with age and "elements".

          Wire colors; faded? I don't think so.

          Steve,

          I don't think it's a question of fading. The yellow is quite bright and not what I'd expect to see from a fading white. Also, some of the wires were covered with blackout or crud, so that significant parts were not exposed to light. I'll try and take a photo and send it to you.

            Re: Wire colors; faded? I don't think so.

            Hi Gary:

            One of my 67 lights had significant color changes due, I think, to having been undercoated at some point in its life. I think the solvent in the undercoating attacked the pigments in the wire insulation. In my case, I could see that the discoloration was not uniform, and that some of the original white/purple/blue colors remained.

            I have another original light of unknown year that I picked up at Carlisle that *appears* to be tan/purple/yellow, but again there is evidence of some discoloration. In this case, though, it's hard to imagine that the original colors were white/purple/blue.
